Back to Victoria
Sunday 9th October
It's hard to imagine that next time we see the family Arthur will be walking and about to have his first birthday. Roll on Christmas!
We pulled into Gundagai for lunch not expecting to see too much open on a Sunday afternoon so we were pleasantly surprised to find several choices open and quite a few people about.
As we have found in many spots the water levels were very high with roads/bridges underwater. I think the tape and barriers were rather unnecessary!
It was interesting to read that The original town was destroyed by flooding in the 1800s and was rebuilt on higher ground...a lesson for Lismore perhaps!
Arriving back in Wangaratta, we collected the van (cost a whole$8 for 4 nights storage) and headed out to Glenrowan where Libby and Eric had taken up residence in their next housesit. There was plenty of room for our van outside and us inside the house.
It was a perfect afternoon and evening so we enjoyed another delicious home-cooked meal around the firepit.
As usual it was a night of lots of talk, robust discussion and too much wine.
Monday 10th October
After a slow start Libby and I took our binoculars for a stroll around the periphery of the property spotting a variety of birds, before a rest was in order.
Libby and Eric had an afternoon commitment back in Yarrawonga so we went with them. While they were busy we did some shopping and had a wander around the town. Their choice to settle here is understandable as it is a vibrant town with plenty of ways to get involved in the community. The wooden sculpture is called Out of the Deep.
We returned to Mullinmur Billabong to collect Libby and Eric.Mullinmur Billabong comprises approximately 20 hectares of floodplain riparian woodland on the Ovens River.
There are three walking tracks with picnic seating along the way, and citizen science activities that attract nature lovers at all times of the year including waterwatch- water quality testing, nest box monitoring, fish surveys and Environmental DNA surveys- Great Australian Platypus Search.
The area is managed by Catholic Education with support from volunteers from Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability Inc and other partner organisations. The area is managed primarily for conservation and education with local schools and groups regularly engaging in environmental education activities.
Tonight's dinner plan was a pub meal at The Glenrowan Pub and after checking it's opening hours on line we were disappointed to find they weren't up to date. On arrival everything was closed up and as there are no other options it was home for Plan B. A much earlier night than last night.
